Braking equipment is the most important component of the rolling stock and has a direct impact on the safety of vehicles. Their purpose is to control the deceleration of the vehicle and, in the final braking phase, to stop and position the vehicle.
The function of the brakes is to generate a force opposite to the direction of travel, which causes deceleration. This force is the mechanical resistance to motion caused by friction of one component against another (e.g. by pressing brake pads against the rolling surfaces of the wheels) or electrodynamically by braking with traction motors operating in alternator mode.
The main brake in railway vehicles is a combined pneumatic brake, i.e. one that operates in all vehicles of the train set and in normal operation mode is operated from one place, i.e. from the driver’s cab through a manual controller called the brake valve (tap), and in modern traction vehicles – a brake adjuster.
