Wheelset axles – known as axial shafts – are monolithic steel components, which are rotary axles for running wheels and additional components, depending on the application and type, such as gear wheels, drive gears, brake discs, brake drums, etc. The above elements are cold pressed through a hydraulic press on the pads, i.e. the thickening of the axis – the place where the diameter of the axis is increased on the appropriate length. In order to achieve the required compression force, the wheel seats have a diameter larger than the inner diameter of the element on which is pressed on them (the difference in diameter is 0.17-0.2 mm).

The axles are finished with bearing journals, on which axle boxes with rolling or (less frequently) plain bearings are mounted. An axle box is a bearing body with a lubricating device. It is part of the bearing assembly connecting the wheel set with the frame of the bogie.

The axles must be such that they distribute stresses evenly and have a high fatigue strength. These features are achieved by proper shaping and processing the steel.
